REIKI Energy Therapy

What is REIKI?

REIKI (pronounced ray-key) means "universal life energy" and is an ancient Japanese technique, which balances your energy on physical, mental and emotional levels.

Eastern medicine works with this energy, recognising that it is vital to health. Acupuncture, tai chi and yoga also work on the basis of this energy flow.

REIKI is a non-invasive therapy that can be used without fear of overdose or side effects.

REIKI complements conventional medical treatments and natural remedies. It does not replace conventional medicine and it is advisable to consult your GP for acute, urgent or infectious conditions.

What are the benefits of REIKI?

REIKI restores natural balance by activating the body's immune system and relieving stress and tension. Relaxation helps the immune system to work more effectively.

REIKI is useful in medical situations. No pressure is necessary and non-contact may be used as appropriate, e.g. tender wounds. REIKI works through materials such as casts, promoting wound healing and is known to reduce pain.

REIKI is safe to use with all ages and all states of health. It is beneficial during pregnancy and any surgical process.

REIKI may be used to support personal development, e.g. changes in smoking, drinking and dietary habits.

REIKI has successfully treated anxiety, asthma, back pain, depression, digestive disorders, emotional upset caused by trauma and bereavement, hypertension, insomnia, joint pain, migraines, sciatic pain, stress.

REIKI is currently being used in a range of settings: palliative care for cancer, GP surgeries, hospices, care of the elderly, post-operative recovery, HIV/AIDS centres, drug rehabilitation and prisons.

What happens during a REIKI treatment?

A brief consultation is given and case notes taken to monitor progress and response to treatment.

The treatment is carried out with the recipient either lying down or sitting, in a relaxing environment and on average lasts an hour. There is no need to remove any clothing.

The practitioner's hands are held over the body, either in contact with, or in close proximity to various organs, glands and energy centres.

The recipient may feel a flow of energy and sensations such as gentle tingling, warmth and coolness.

The REIKI energy relaxes and de-stresses. Through deep relaxation emotional tensions can be released as well as physical discomfort.

After the treatment you need to drink plenty of water to help the body detoxify. The REIKI energy continues to work for several days, it is best to respond to the body's demands, e.g. rest if tired.

How many sessions will I need?

It is usual to have a course of regular treatment, generally ranging from one session per week to one per month, depending on your needs. Your practitioner will discuss a treatment plan with you, which will be reviewed regularly.
